Abstract
821,378. Phase contrast microscopes. LOCQUIN, M. May 30, 1957 [June 22, 1956], No. 17185/57. Class 97(1) A phase contrast microscope having a condenser lens adapted to illuminate the object with a hollow conical beam from a conventional source, and a wide angle objective lens, is provided with an interference filter extending over the whole aperture of the objective which has a numerical aperture substantially equal to that of the condenser. As shown, light from a source 1 is reflected by a mirror 3 through a variable annular diaphragm 4 and converges on to the object 6 by means of the condenser 5; the rays then pass through the interference filter 7 to the microscope objective 8 to form a contrasted image 10 of the object. The variable aperture 4 may be in the form of a disc rotatable about a vertical axis having several annular apertures which may be brought successively into the optical system. The filter 7 is in the form of a slab of transparent material such as cryolite with semi-transparent coatings on both faces. A first or higher order filter may be used, and a second interference filter may be associated with the light source. The Specification contains a theoretical discussion of the properties of such a system.
