821,376. Laminates. SMITH MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. May 13, 1957 [May 12, 1956], No. 15054/57. Class 140. [Also in Group XV] A carpet tile 10, that is carpet formed in relatively small tile-like squares processed to be handled and used in the manner of tile, comprises a base member 11 of relatively stiff but flexible character, a carpet surface 14 permanently secured to one side of the basemember 11, a pressure-sensitive adhesive coating on the exposed outer side of the base-member 11 and a sheet-like covering 15 applied over the pressure-sensitive adhesive but peelable therefrom. The layer 11 may be of felt and may be coated or impregnated with, e.g., a blend of rubber latex and starch and then passed over a heated smoothing roll to form it with a smooth surface, which later becomes the surface coated with pressure-sensitive adhesive. The layer 11 may be skived around its edges on one side, preferably as shown, the upper side, so that the carpet 14 slopes slightly downwards towards the edges of the tile. The adhesive used to secure the carpet to the layer 11 is preferably water-resistant, e.g. one based on natural or synthetic rubber. The sheet-like covering 15 may be of paper or the like.
