Multiple superposed coatings; coating with adhesive and powdered materials; ornamenting. - Waterproof material for the uppers, of overshoes comprises an inner layer of sheet material, a layer of rubber compound, a layer of adhesive material containing small particles of fibrous material, and a layer of small particles of fibrous material on the surface. The base material 6 is of woven or knitted fabric, on to which is calendered a layer 7 of rubber compound, containing, for example, rubber, zinc oxide, sulphur and an accelerator, preferably diphenylguanidine. The adhesive layer 8 is preferably rubber solution, and has incorporated therein particles of the fibrous material used for the surface layer. While this layer is still sticky, the upper layer of fibrous material consisting of flock, ground leather, or hair, is applied, the excess being removed by suction. Pigments may be added to the layers 8 and 9. The material may be finally embossed or printed.
