Abstract

821,321. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 13, 1955 [Dec. 14, 1954], No. 35774/55. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XXIII] A discharge lamp, particularly a lowpressure fluorescent lamp, having a filling of mercury and argon at a pressure of 2-5 mms., has an envelope 22 so shaped that it has circular sections 3 and one or more sections 23, 24 each having an outwardly open deep transversely re-entrant groove extending longitudinally of the envelope so as to provide a kidney-shaped cross-section, Fig. 5, in which the wall portion 17 forming the groove is spaced substantially uniformly from the opposite arcuate wall portion 16, and is joined thereto by curved wall portions 18 having a radius of curvature approximately one-half the distance between the opposite wall portions, and in which the length of the periphery of the envelope cross-section measured along the inner wall portion 17 is of the order of one-half that of the outer wall portion 16. The inner and outer wall portions 17, 16 can be partcylindrical. The re-entrant groove can be so shaped that the ratio of circumference to area of cross-section of the envelope as that of a round tube flattened so that the length of cross-section is three times the width. The envelope can have one re-entrant groove which extends substantially the length of the envelope or can have a plurality of longitudinally spaced grooves with a length comparable to the maximum diameter of the envelope and up to three times that diameter and curved both longitudinally and transversely of the envelope. The grooves can be arranged in staggered positions on opposite sides of the envelope. The envelope can be coated exteriorly with a water-repellent substance to facilitate starting. Methods of making the envelope are described.
