[Also in Group II] In a travelling grate carried by rollers running on rails, part of the weight of the grate carriage is transferred by lever action from the running rails to the sealing surfaces of a slideway arranged between a suction box and the grate carriage. The grate 2 and its carriage 1 run on rollers 4 on rails 5, which need not be resilient. The rail 5 is supported by a beam 6 secured to brackets 11 which can tilt freely about bearings 12 within a small angle. The carriage 1 slides along a member 8 carried by a beam 7 rigidly mounted on the brackets 11. A flexible heat-resistant strip 14 seals the gap between the slideway 8 and the suction box 10. The distribution of the weight of the grate between the rails 5 and the slideway 8 can be adjusted by displacing the bearings 12 by a threaded spindle 13. The beam 7 may be resilient. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the underside of a slideway carried by a lever on the same side of the fulcrum as the running rail forms a seal with an upwardly directed surface on the grate carriage.
