Abstract

655,961. Rectilinear-motion bearings. DEXTER & CO. (HIGH WYCOMBE), Ltd., and McVEY, G. Dec. 7, 1948, No. 31677. [Class 12 (i)] A rectilinear-motion bearing comprises two parallel rows of balls 1 which are contained within groups of four parallel rods 2, 3 of circular cross-section mounted in V-grooves on carriers 5, 7, the carriers being separated by a space which is adapted to provide a downward unobstructed outlet for dust from the rows when the axes thereof are disposed in a horizontal plane, and means are provided for applying a lateral pressure to the parallel rods to retain the balls in contact therewith. A central carrier 5 secured to a fixed bracket 15 by bolts 16 has two grooves 4 in each side containing rods 2. The outer carriers 7 are secured to the underside of a worktable or the like 17 by bolts 18, the bolts in the right-hand carrier 7 having clearance with respect to holes 19, so that the carrier may have limited lateral movement. A longitudinal flange 20 on the edge of the worktable 17 carries bolts 21 which may be tightened to adjust the disposition of the carriers 7 with respect to the carrier 5 and hence to adjust the pressure between the balls and rods. The rods 2, 3 may comprise coaxial sections having their ends spigoted and socketed in complementary manner, or they may each be a continuous length of rod.
