819,565. Rotary engines. PRENDERGAST, C. S. Dec. 30, 1957 [Aug. 2, 1957), No. 24570/57. Class 1.10 (2). Sliding vane pump or motor in which at least one circular rotor 6 carrying a plurality of vanes 16 rotates in an eccentric stator has the vanes arranged in equi-distant pairs, the grooves 15 of each pair being close together and the inner end of each groove connected to the periphery of the rotor by a channel 15A through which fluid enters the grooves beneath the vanes from the pumping chambers as the vanes move outwards under centrifugal force. Preferably the grooves are non-radial and so inclined that the vanes of each pair diverge inwardly from the periphery of the rotor, so that fluid pressure in the grooves always maintains at least two vanes in contact with the bore of the stator between the expansion and compression chambers to provide an efficient seal. The rotor may be used in the pump of Specification 810,556.
