Abstract
819,503. Cartridge actuated tool for firing bolts. TORNADO-RAMSET G.m.bH. & CO. Nov. 16, 1956 [Nov. 22, 1955], No. 35138/56. Class 119 A cartridge-actuated tool for firing bolts and the like comprises a breech-block 14 sliding axially in a circular casing 10 and acted upon by a spring 17 that moves it against the breech end of a barrel 11 when the tool is fired; the breech-block 14 being rotatable so that a sector shaped opening 26 in it can be brought into register with both the breech and an opening 27 in the casing 10 for loading, or rotated so that these components move out of register so that a firing pin 22, housed in a bore 21 in the block 14, is brought into alignment with the breech for firing a cartridge. The axis Y-Y of the bore 21 is disposed eccentrically with respect to the axis of rotation XX- of the breech-block 14 as also is the axis Z-Z of the barrel 11. The block 14 can be rotated by a handle 19 on a pin 20 which operates in a gate 18 cut in the casing 10 as shown in the development in Fig. 10. For loading the handle 19 is put at position "a" (Fig. 4) after loading it is moved to "b" whereby the spring 17 is put into compression against a cover plate 15 and whence it is moved to a position "c" where it is retained with the breechblock 14. In this position the firing pin 22 projects against the base of a loaded cartridge 29 and prevents it from dropping out to the rear, but is not in a suitable alignment to fire it. The barrel 11 is longitudinally slidable, but not rotatable, in the casing 10 and can be forced rearwardly against a spring 13 (Fig. 2, not shown) by pressing the muzzle 12 against the work surface into which the bolt is to be fired. The rear end of the barrel has annular groove 30 and a longitudinal groove 31, Fig. 6, that engage the inwardly bent end 34 of a spring 33 disposed around the inside of a chamber 32 in the front end of the breechblock 14. With the pin 20 in the position "c" the bent end 34 is engaged in the longitudinal groove 31 so long as the barrel has not been forced rearwardly and prevent any rotation of the breech-block 14 beyond the position "c". For firing the muzzle 12 is applied to the work surface and the barrel 11 is forced rearwardly causing the bent end 34 of the spring to come into alignment with the groove 30 so as to permit the handle 19 to be moved to the position "d", further rotating the breech block 40. In this position the firing pin 22 and the bore 21 are fully aligned and, at the same time, the breech-block 14 is free to be forced forward by the spring 17 to fire the cartridge. Towards the end of the forward movement of the breechblock 14 the shoulder 24 strikes against the firing pin 22 and it fires the cartridge 29. Gas escapes from the barrel through a lateral opening 36 into the chamber 37 in the casing which acts as a silencer. The mouth 38 of the bore 21 is so shaped that the rim of the cartridge becomes jammed in it after firing. When the breech-block 14 is retracted by moving the handle from position "e" to position "d" the rod 23 abuts against the cover plate 15 and pushes the firing pin 22 forward to eject the base of the cartridge from its lodgement in the bore-mouth 38 so that it drops out into the chamber 22. In Fig. 12 (not shown) an embodiment is shown in which in pin 42 attached to the holding handle 35 co-operates with a bore in the breech-block 14 so that the weapon can be fired by rotation of its handle 35 instead of by a movement of the handle 19.
