An emergency stop device for a turbine whose admission valve 10 is controlled by a servomotor' 7 actuated by pressure liquid, which may be the turbine lubricating oil, comprises a spring- loaded piston 3 subjected on one side to the pressure liquid and arranged such that when the pressure of the pressure liquid falls below a predetermined amount the piston is moved by its spring 2 to actuate the servomotor piston 8 to close the valve 10. The pressure liquid is supplied to the servomotor distributing valve 6 via the stop device cylinder 1. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the movement of the piston 3 is transmitted directly to the servomotor piston 8 by contacting the rod 11 thereof; in an alternative arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the cylinder 1 is disposed to one side of the servomotor and the movement of the piston 3 is transmitted to the piston 8 through a pivoted lever.
