Abstract
818,651. Carding engines. SCHIAPARELLI, G. April 10, 1957, No. 11652/57. Class 120(1) In a roller carding engine, fibres are opened and carded or drawn during their passage from each slow running worker roller W to the corresponding faster running stripper roller 5 by the action of a small roller A located in contact with and in the angle between rollers W, S, roller A rotating in the opposite direction to that of rollers W. S, at a surface speed greater than that of roller W but less than that of roller S. Fibres carried by a worker W are laid down on the roller, with their free ends pointing forwards, by flaps b of a rapidly-rotating roller L. These fibres pass beneath roller A until their free ends are caught by the stripper while the worker still retains their other ends. As the fibres pass from the worker to the stripper they are subjected to a drafting action. Roller A may be card clothed so as to comb the fibres during drafting. Roller L may be replaced by a smooth or grooved roller. Alternatively, roller L may be dispensed with and roller A may be smoothsurfaced; in that case roller A exerts a frictional control on the fibres during drafting between the worker and stripper. The speeds of rollers A and S may be variable.
