Abstract
818,273. Grinding glass &c. LIBBEYOWENS-FORD GLASS CO. Oct. 4, 1955 [Oct. 11, 1954], No. 28173/55. Class 60. A method of treating a surface S comprises arranging the surface in spaced relation with a vibration generating means 13, providing a film of an abrasive containing energy conducting medium between the surface and the means, and transmitting vibrations to the medium from the vibration generating means. Sheets of glass, steel plate or plastic material are mounted on carriages 10 which move along rails 11 beneath the vibration generating means 13. These means are of a magnetostrictive type with a laminated core 45 and electrical windings 46 which are fed through a cable 66 with an A.C. supply, each means being supported between a pair of channelled members 39, 40 by nodal tabs 47. Both channels are mounted in a frame member 38 which may be vertically adjusted by a screw 51 while one of the channels 40 is arranged to be displaced by a screw 44 to enable the vibration generating means 13 to be removed from the apparatus. The frame members 38 are carried by beams 14, 15 which are reciprocated either in unison or in staggered relationship by crank drives 31, 32 driven through bevel gearing 24, 30 by a shaft 23. A mixture of an abrasive, such as sand, boron oxide, aluminium oxide, or rough, and a liquid, such as water, detergent, or acid, is fed to each of the vibration generating means 13 from a main distribution pipe 63 by a pipe section 62, a rubber hose 60, and a tube 55 of fibre or rubber material. A detachable working face 50 is provided on each of the means 13 which are cooled by water or air jets from a pipe 64. Alternatively, pipes which cool by heat absorption may be used. The distance between the working faces 50 and the surface being ground is adjusted so that the surface tension and capillary attraction characteristics of the liquid used are sufficient to maintain it between face 50 and the surface to be ground. External pipes may be used to spray the abrasive medium between the working faces 50 and the surface to be treated. Specification 602,801 is referred to.
