Abstract

Implements such as spades, shovels, picks, hammers, hammer picks or the like, for use in an explosive or inflammable atmosphere are tipped with a non-sparking metal such as a copper alloy by high temperature brazing or welding. The body of the implement may be of steel or beryllium-copper alloy and the non-sparking tip of aluminium-bronze. The tip may be deposited on the body from a rod using an oxy-acetylene flame, electric arc, or by an atomic hydrogen or argon are welding process. The temperature used should preferably be within 150 DEG C. of the melting point of the body metal. The following compositions of aluminium-bronze welding rods as percentages by weight are given: Al. 8,5-10,5, Ni. 3,0-5,5, Fe. 3,0-5,5, Mn. 3,0 max, Zn. 0,5 max, impurities 0,3 max, remainder copper; Al. 9,4, Ni. 3,5, Fe. 3,9, Mn. 3,2, Cu. 78,7. Examples are also given of the size of rod, welding-gas pressures and temperatures used. The tip may be subsequently hardened by heat-treatment. A complete coating of non-sparking metal may be deposted on the body by welding or brazing.ALSO:Aluminium-bronze alloys for use as welding rods have the following percentage compositions by weight: Al 8.5-10.5. Ni 3.0-5.5, Fe 3.0-5.5, Mn 3.0 max, Zn 0.5 max, impurities 0.3 max, remainder copper; Al 9.4, Ni 3.5, Fe 3.9, Mn 3.2, Cu 78.7.
