Abstract
A welding electrode or rod contains iron, cobalt, and at least one of molybdenum, niobium, tantalum or tungsten such that the deposit is a precipitation hardenable substantially carbon-free ternary or higher alloy that can be worked by cutting, grinding, &c., immediately following deposition, and subsequently hardened by annealing. At least part of one or more of the metals is in the flux coating if any, preferably as a metal powder, but it may be in combined state. The weld metal is used for tool tipping, roll repairs, seaming, &c., and is rapidly cooled from 1200 DEG to 1300 DEG C before annealing at 500 DEG to 700 DEG C by furnace or carbon arc. The proportions are varied to produce martensitic, ferritic, semi-ferritic, or austenitic structures and examples contain 3 to 60 per cent cobalt and 4 to 40 per cent tungsten; 3 to 65 per cent cobalt and 4 to 35 per cent molybdenum; 3 to 75 per cent cobalt and 4 to 25 per cent tantalum or niobium. A coating on a mild steel wire comprises ferro molybdenum (35/65) 20 parts, cobalt 25 parts, ferro-manganese 2 parts, ferro silicon 6 parts, flux and slag-forming substances 47 parts, by weight, plus a binder, e.g., water-glass.
