817,647. Earth-moving apparatus; shovelling machines. MID-WESTERN INDUSTRIES Inc. Nov. 8, 1955 [Nov. 8, 1954; Nov. 18, 1954], No. 31859/55. Class 68(1) A tool-carrying broom has telescopic arms 10 within which are disposed fluid actuated, double-acting jacks 15 for extending and contracting the parts 11, 12 of the arms and to the parts 12 are attached at 35 link members 16. The parts 11 are pivotally mounted at 13 to a frame 19 which can be secured to a tractor and the link members connected at 32 to brackets 17 on the frame. The length of the link members is such that they become tensioned immediately the arms are extended from a fully retracted position and then cause upward pivotal movement of the arms as the arms are further extended. The link members 16 can be chains or rods having lost motion connection with the parts 12 of the arms 10. The tool may be a grader blade or a shovel. When the frame 19 is secured to the tractor the axis 13 is so positioned with respect to axis of the traction wheels 8A that when the arms 10 are fully retracted so that the link members 16 are slack and the tool engages the ground the line of reactive thrust from the tool to the axis 13 passes below the axis of the traction wheels.
