817,323. Boring and milling machines. ASQUITH Ltd., W., and JOHNSON, A. Oct. 24, 1955 [Oct. 29, 1954], No. 31314/54. Class 83 (3). A boring or milling machine comprises a spindle 28 and a spindle sleeve 18 which are axially and rotationally movable, the rotational drive 20 for the sleeve being at its forward end ahead of a thrust-bearing 22. A drive-shaft 64 rotates the sleeve via a shaft 48 and gears 40, 20. Expansion of the sleeve is allowed by an axially-movable rear-bearing 24. For a highspeed drive, an attachment may be secured directly in the end 43 of the shaft 48. The spindle-and-sleeve assembly is mounted in a ram 12. In a modification, the spindle is not keyed to the sleeve but is rotated from its rear end, while the sleeve is rotated from the front, the drive to both being through change-speed gears slidable axially on their shafts.
