Abstract
A hydrocarbon fuel oil composition contains a minor amount of a compound of formula <FORM:0817262/III/1> where A is a divalent hydrocarbon radical having 2 or 3 carbon atoms, n is an integer from 2 to 5, and R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having 8 to 22 carbon atoms or one derived from rosin and tall oil acids, or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal or amine salt or an alkyl ester of the above compound. The amine salt is derived from a monoamine of formula R1NH2, R12NH or R13N, where R1 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 22 carbon atoms or is derived from rosin and tall oil acids, or from a diamine salt of formula R11NH(CH21nNH2, where R11 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having 8 to 22 carbon atoms or is derived from rosin and tall oil acids. The fuel oil may be a diesel oil or heating oil and may contain between 25 parts per million and 2 per cent, preferably between 50 and 100 parts per million, of the additive. In examples, domestic fuel oils contain compounds of the formula <FORM:0817262/III/2> where R is a mixture of radicals derived either from soybean acids or from tallow acids, and sodium, calcium, and amine salts of such compounds, and amine salts of such compounds, the amine salts being those of di-n-butyl amine, di-coco amine, and N-tallow trimethylene diamine.
