Abstract

816,962. Control systems for electric heaters. MACLAREN & CO. Ltd., R., and ADAM, I. R. Aug. 19, 1957 [Aug. 20, 1956], No. 25342/56. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXVII] In a system wherein an electric resistance heater is controlled by a cycling switch, the switch is connected to and is operated by two opposing therm responsive devices acting alternately, and synchronously with the switch to decrease the cycling time. A heating element 1 is controlled by a manual switch 9 and thermally operated switch 2, the latter being closed through a bimetallic bar 5 by a heater 6 connected across its contacts, and opened by a second heater 4 which may be connected in series or parallel with element 1. Switch 10 (normally closed) provides full on conditions. On closing switch 9, switch 2 is open and the resistances of heaters 4, 6 and element 1 are such that the temperature of heater 6 rises, and closes switch 2, shunting heater 6, and fully energizing element 1 and heater 4. The latter, acting on an extention 3 of bar 5, opens switch 2. Switch 10 may be replaced by two switches coupled to the control knob, and operated in the " full " and off " positions.
