Abstract

816,850. Shearing. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. June 7, 1957, No. 18167/57. Class 83 (4). In a shears having a pair of rotary disc blades 22 in a vertical plane oblique to the path of feed of the moving stock and in which a movable guide 43 through which the stock passes is swung to direct the stock through the blades 22 to effect shearing, the end of the movable guide 43 nearest the blades 22 is maintained closely adjacent to the cutting edges of the blades 22. As shown in Fig. 1, two shears 21, 22 are mounted on a common bed 11, the lower discs 21, 22 of each shears being mounted on a common shaft 18. Tapered cups 17 keyed on to the tapered ends of shaft 18 are slidably keyed in the cupped ends of shafts 10, so that by rotation of nuts 23 threaded on the cups 17 the longitudinal position of the shaft 18 can be adjusted. A motor 28 is connected to one shaft 10. The shafts 10 are mounted in eccentric sleeves carrying gears 31. The upper blades are mounted and driven in the same manner, the gears 31 of the upper and lower shafts 10 being in mesh and rotatable manually to adjust the distance between the shafts 18. On the exit side of each shears is a fixed guide 41 divided by a partition 41a and having an oblique flared end 42 adjacent the blades. Each movable guide 43 has an oblique end adjacent the blades and is slidably carried on a fixed tubular guide 44. A sleeve 46 secured to each guide 43 is connected to a piston-rod 54 held by a latch 48. When the latch 48 is released, a spring 57 pre-compressed by a fluid-pressure cylinder 55, drives the piston-rod 54 and so the end of the guide 43 along a path parallel to the blades 22 and the stock is sheared, whilst moving at the speed of the blades, the first part of the stock having passed through the right-hand portion of the exit guide 41 and the second part being directed to the left-hand portion of the guide 41.
