Abstract

816,633. Reinforcing, laying and suspending cables. POSTMASTER GENERAL. July 5, 1957 [July 6, 1956; Aug. 14, 1956], Nos. 21088/56 and 24881/56. Class 36. The outer sheath 2 of a cable 1 is provided with one or more longitudinal grooves 3, each of which receives and grips a supporting hawser 5. The cable may be eccentric with respect to the sheath, which may be of polythene. The mouth 4 of groove 3 is narrower than the diameter of the hawser 5 so that the latter may be inserted in the grooves by distortion of the lips 6 which then restore to their original position to grip the hawser. The sheath may be formed with additional grooves or longitudinal passages 7 to reduce the weight of the cable. Strengthening wires or additional conductors may be accommodated in the passages 7. The sheath 2 may be discontinuous along the length of the cable so that the hawser is held only at intervals. The hawser may act as a messenger wire for overhead cables or as a reinforcement for submarine or underground cables, and may be forced into the groove during laying.
