816,594. Stuffing-box substitutes. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. Oct. 28, 1957 [Oct. 29, 1956], No. 33497/57. Class 122 (5). The shaft 1 of an electric generator operating in a hydrogen-filled casing is sealed by means comprising a flange 5 integral with the shaft and a sealing ring 6, mounted in the casing wall 2, axially urged towards the flange and provided on its face facing the flange with concentric ridges 10, 11 and radial ridges 12 therebetween forming spaces 13 which are fed with pressure oil, each through its own channel 14, from a common oil source. The sealing ring 6 is in the form of a differential piston sealed to the wall 2 by packing rings 19, 20 and is urged toward the flange 5 by springs 7 and by the pressure of oil supplied through a channel 18 to the space 17 between the ring and the wall. Oil is supplied from the space 17 through restrictions 15 in the channels 14 to the spaces 13 and escapes radially therefrom through the clearances 27, 28 between the ridges 10, 11 and the flange. The sealing ring 6 is supported by a roller 23 that is journalled in a forked member 24 attached to the wall 2 and engages a slot 25 in a part 26 attached to the ring which is thereby held against rotation whilst being free to move axially. The spaces 3 and 4 are subject to hydrogen pressure and atmosphere respectively.
