Abstract

816,303. Contact needles; electrolytic etching. EGYESULT IZZOLAMPA ES VILLAMOSSAGI, R. T. Oct. 8, 1956 [Oct. 7, 1955], No. 30658/56. Classes 37 and 41. Whisker electrodes to be made from tungsten or molybdenum are shaped by electrolysis so that the normal to the surface at the end of the needle makes an angle of 45- 90 degrees with the axis of the needle. Suitable lengths of tungsten or molybdenum of from 0.13 to 0.15 mm. diameter are cleaned and degreased before being attached to nickel carriers for brief A.C. electrolysis in a 20 per cent solution of KOH using a platinum counter electrode. These pretreated lengths of wire are then immersed at an angle in an electrolyte consisting of phosphoric acid or an aqueous solution of a water-soluble phosphate, the counter electrodes being of platinum and preferably circular, surrounding the pretreated electrodes. A positive potential of about 110 volts is then applied to the central electrodes until the current through the cell drops almost to zero. The central electrodes then have the form shown in Fig. 3. These electrodes are then once more cleaned by electrolysis in KOH as described above. The composition of the electrolyte may be 70 per cent phosphoric acid and distilled water; or 20 per cent NaH 2 PO 4 , 15 per cent NaOH, 10 per cent KF, 1 per cent K 2 CrO 4 and distilled water; or 20 per cent KH 2 PO 4 , 15 per cent KOH, and distilled water.
