Abstract

305,680. Bacsa, J. Aug. 8, 1927. Electrodes; electrolytes.-Electrodes for accumulators are made from nickel, cobalt, or iron by first electrolytically depositing the metal on a carrier of sheet metal or wire fabric, using a neutral salt solution. The carrier with its deposit of metal is then made the anode in an alkaline solution whereby the deposited metal becomes oxidized. The third step consists in reducing the oxidized metal by again making it the cathode in a neutral salt solution. The various processes are repeated until the coating of active material is sufficient. If the carrier is of the same metal as the metal from which the active material is formed, the first step consisting in the deposition of the metal on the carrier may be omitted. A cadmium electrode may be made by a similar process but the first step, namely, the deposition of metallic cadmium, cannot be omitted but must be interposed between the third and second steps. The anodic oxidation of the metal deposited in the first step may be effected in an eighteen to twenty per cent solution of caustic soda, a potential difference of 1.7 to 2 volts being used. A nickel or cobalt oxide electrode prepared as above may be used as the positive electrode in an accumulator having an alkaline electrolyte; the negative electrode may consist of ferrous oxide or metallic cadmium.
