Abstract

816,191. Feeding sheets to a press. MIEHLE-GOSS-DEXTER Inc. July 23, 1957 [Aug. 14, 1956], No. 23275/57. Class 117 Rigid sheets are fed from hopper 22 (Fig. 1) by feeder platform 31 driven by, and reciprocated in timed relationship with, bed 12 of a cylinder-and-flat-bed press 12, 13. Carriage 31 has a smaller and slower cycle of reciprocation than the bed 12 and transfers the lowermost sheet 19 from hopper 22 until the front portion of the sheet touches stop 104, the sheet from this position being fed into the nip between bed 12 and cylinder 13 by feeder roller 103 Roller 103 has two movements; it is driven in the forward direction, whilst being lowered on to the sheet under the control of cam 108, Roller 103 is then raised by cam 108 whilst not being driven, in order to permit the next sheet to be brought to the stop 104. With every forward movement, therefore, of bed 12 a sheet is fed to the nip between the cylinder and the bed and simultaneously a following sheet from hopper 22 is fed to stop 104. Bed 12 is reciprocated on wheels 16 and 46 (Fig. 3), by means not described, whilst sprocket 48 on shaft 42 engages and is therefore driven by chain 51 mounted on bed 12 in order to prevent back lash in the reciprocating movement of the said bed. The drive to carriage 31, comes from the thus-driven shaft 42 via gear 53, rack 54 slidingly mounted on bed 12, and a connecting link 58. Gear 53 is made smaller than sprocket 48 so as to make the cycle of carriage 31 smaller and slower than that of bed 12. Carriage 31 carries pushers 61 (Fig; 6), each pusher being pivotally mounted at 68 and influenced by springs 70, the height of the pusher being determined by the position of roller 74. When the carriage moves leftwards, roller 74 engages cam surfaces 77 and 76 to cause the pusher 61 to withdraw beneath the pile of sheets in hopper 22. The shape of the cam then permits the pusher 61 to rise so that it may engage the lowermost sheet on the subsequent forward movement. The height of pushers 61 is also controlled by handle 94 through a linkage 91, track 88, roller 87, and lever 86, so that by swinging handle 94 clockwise the pushers 61 are lowered and the bed 12 may reciprocate without movement of the sheet.
