Abstract
Fertilizer materials in granular form are coated with an inorganic material such as calcium sulphate and then with a substantially water-insoluble polymeric material to render them non-caking and to retard the availability of the nutrient substances to the soil. The polymeric materials mentioned are polymers and copolymers of stryene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, ethylene, fluorinated alkenes or a protein based polymeric product such as that formed between gelatine and formaldehyde. After coating with the inorganic material the granular fertilizers may be sprayed with a suitable solution of the plastic, or they may be sprayed with an intermediary of the plastic and the polymerisation, at further cross-linking or other modification may then take place. The example illustrates coating granules initially with ammonium sulphatenitrate with gypsum and then with gelatine followed by formaldehyde, thus forming the polymeric material in situ on the granules. Fertilizer components disclosed include phosphates, superphosphates, potassium and ammonium salts e.g. ammonium sulphate, nitrate or phosphate potassium chloride or urea and salts of urea.
