Abstract

Fertilizer granules are rendered slow-release by a coating comprising paraffin wax and a polyalkylene having a molecular weight of less than 10,000. The fertilizer may be a PKN fertilizer, urea, ammonium nitrate, or ammonium nitrate/calcium carbonate. The paraffin wax may have an initial m.p. of less than 70 DEG C. and may contain up to 7% of hydrocarbon oil. It may be a mixture of macro-and micro-crystalline wax containing 70-90% of the macro form. The polyalkylene may be polyethylene, polypropylene or polyethylene/propylene. The coating may also comprise polyvinyl acetate. The polyalkylene content of the coating may be up to 50%. The weight of the coating composition based on the granules may be up to 20%. The granules may be sprayed in a rotating drum with the coating composition as a melt at 120-140 DEG C. or as a solution in a hydrocarbon. Alternatively the granules may be immersed in a melt. If a plurality of coatings are applied by spraying, the granules are heated to 30-60 DEG C. for application of the first coating. The coated granules may be dusted with lime or clay.
