Abstract
815,623. Floor polishing machines. BYLOCK ELECTRIC Ltd. Aug. 14, 1957 [Sept. 6, 1956], No. 27391/56. Class 138(1). In a machine for polishing, burnishing, scrubbing or cleansing floors or like surfaces of the kind having a plurality of disc brushes 1, e.g. three, rotatable about vertical axes and driven frictionally from a vertical motor-driven shaft, two brush-driving wheels 2 are supported by bearings 10 sliding towards and away from the shaft 8 in rectilinear slots 12 (in a base plate 3) by which they are guided, inclined to the direction of forward movement of the machine, so that during such movement the wheels 2 will tend to be forced into driving engagement with the shaft 8. The third brush-driving wheel 2<SP>1</SP> similarly mounted contacts the wheels 2 and is forward thereof, each slot 12 being substantially at right angles to the line joining the centres of the wheel 2<SP>1</SP> and the wheel 2 guided in the slot. Each wheel 2 is attached through a spindle 9 to a brush 1, each bearing 10 being mounted between plates 11, 15 in a block 11a to slide in a slot 12 towards the spigot or shaft 8 by the force of a spring 14. Means for controlling movement of the bearings comprises a cam 17 pivoted on the plate 3 acting through rollers 18 upon bevellededge portions of the plates 15 and having an arm 19 engageable with an extension finger 20 on one limb 21 of a fork of the machine handle. By movement of the handle 13 the wheels can thus be brought into and out of engagement with the shaft 8. Each brush 1 is mounted so as to permit it to rock slightly from its normal horizontal position by having a flat leaf spring 24 with bent-upwings received in a recess 26 in the brush body 1a. The leaf spring 24 as well as a small driving plate 27 engaging with reinforced shoulders projecting into the recess 26 to drive the brush are held on the spindle 9 by a screw which also serves to secure a fastening clip 29 whereby a felt pad may be held in position by a press stud. A spring-loaded cam 23 on the handle fork 21 is made to actuate a motor switch 22 to switch the motor on after the brushes 2 are brought into driving engagement with the shaft 8 on moving the handle to its working position and vice-versa. Specification 740,250 is referred to.
