In a shoe polishing machine in which rotating brushes are revolved around a support for an inserted shoe worn by the user of the machine, the maximum height of contact between a brush and a shoe is varied during a revolution in order to prevent polish being applied to the user's sock or stocking. The machine illustrated is adapted to polish either brown or black shoes, a shoe to be polished being placed on one of two supporting plates 12 about which revolve rotating brushes 8 or 9. The latter are rotatable in bearing arms 43 or 44 pivotally mounted on a plate 6 or 7 rotatable by a roller 14 driven by an electric motor 36. Each pair of arms 43 or 44 is drawn together by a tension spring 16 to engage friction rollers 10 or 11 with an oval guide plate 13 to rotate the brushes 8 or 9. As the latter revolve the arms 43 or 44 are each tilted at a variable angle by a spring 16 to vary the maximum height of contact of each brush 8 or 9 with the shoe. Polish applying brushes 24 are provided above the supporting plates 12. The machine may be coin operated, and the driving motor 36 and electromagnetic valves through which polish is supplied to the brushes 24 may be controlled by either of two switches actuated by the heel of an inserted shoe.
