1458964 Boot and shoe cleaning machines M E HILLEL and E M HILLEL 19 April 1974 [26 Jan 1973 (2)] 35079/72 and 35080/72 Heading A4F An automatic shoe or boot polishing apparatus comprises a casing for receiving a pair of shoes or boots to be polished, and an electric motor driven rotary brush for brushing the shoes or boots. The machine illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 has shoe receiving platforms 4 in a casing 2, and rotary brushes 28, 30, 32 on shafts 16, 18, 20 driven by an electric motor 64. Each brush has two diametrically opposed ribs of bristles 34, 36 Fig. 3, (not shown), the bristles of the brushes 28, 32 being of the same length as those of a middle portion of the brush 30, which has end-portions 40 with longer bristles for cleaning the heel and toe portions of the shoes. The machine is controlled by an electrical control circuit whereby the brushes are rotated for successive predetermined periods at high and low speed, respectively, and during the low speed period a solenoid device 78 is actuated to lower a plate 74 to operate spraying devices on aerosol containers 68 holding liquid shoe polish. In an alternative embodiment shoe carrying platforms 104, 104 Fig. 5, (not shown) are rotatably oscillated about horizontal axes to turn the shoes upside down so that opposite sides thereof may be cleaned by a single rotary brush, and may be sprayed with polish by aerosol spraying devices actuated by a crank mechanism which also oscillates the platforms.
