Abstract
Articles and structures are produced by forming a thin coating of polythene on a metal surface, oxidizing this coating by baking it at a temperature above its melting-point, contacting the coating with molten high-density polythene, i.e. polythene of a density not less than 0.94 gm./cc., and causing or allowing the high-density polythene to solidify by cooling. The initial coating may be applied by dipping the metal in a solution or gel of polythene, or spreading a gel on the surface; by dipping in a dispersion or in molten polythene; by coating the surface with polythene powder and fusing; by flame spraying; or by covering the surface with a pre-formed film of polythene which is subsequently melted. Oxidation catalysts such as di-tert-butyl peroxide, tert-butyl hydroperoxide, ferric linoleate, cobalt naphthenate or zinc chloride may be added. More than one coating may be applied and oxidized before the high-density polythene is applied. The process may be applied to any metal, e.g. aluminium and steel, and forms a particularly good bond with copper; other metals or other materials may be copper plated before coating. The high-density polythene is applied by extrusion moulding, calendering, casting or like method. The method may be applied to the production of electrical goods such as insulators, generator stators, condensers, plugs and sockets and valve bases and the like.ALSO:Articles and structures are produced by forming a thin coating of polythene on a metal surface, oxidising this coating by baking it at a temperature above its melting-point, contacting the coating with molten high density polythene, i.e. polythene of a density not less than 0,94 gm. cc., and causing or allowing the high density polythene to solidify by cooling.
