In a disconnecting switch either the fixed or the moving contact is in the form of two spaced limbs for embracing the other contact and the co-operating surfaces of the contacts are of silver and copper respectively. In Figs. 1 and 3, the moving contact is a copper tube 6 pivoted at 21 on a terminal member 2 and provided with silver contact buttons 12 at its free end. These silver buttons co-operate with a fixed copper contact formed by four drawn copper risers 8 which are pressed upwardly by backing springs 11. Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), illustrate a pole-operated switch in which the moving contact comprises two pivoted parallel spaced copper blades interconnected at their ends and midpoints, the blades embracing a copper post which is provided with silver contact buttons. In both of the above examples one of the co-operating surfaces at the hinge of the pivoted moving contact may be of silver. In Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the moving contact is in the form of a resilient substantially U-shaped copper strip element which is carried on a pivotally mounted insulator and cooperates with a copper post which has silver contact buttons.
