Abstract
Vulcanized natural or artificial rubber articles are protected against ageing by application to the surface of a compound of the formula <FORM:0815263/IV (a)/1> where R1 stands for an alkyl, cycloalkyl, or alkyl-cycloalkyl radical and R2 stands for an alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkyl-cycloalkyl, or aryl radical or an aryl radical containing an alkyl, cycloalkyl, or alkyl-cycloalkyl substituent. There may be used N-tolyl-N1-sec.-butyl-p-phenylene - diamine, N - iso - propyl - N1 - phenyl - p - phenylene - diamine, N - cyclohexyl-N1 - phenyl - p - phenylene - diamine, or N:N1-di - 41 - methyl - cyclohexyl - p - phenylene diamine, or, preferably, compounds in which R1 and R2 are alkyl or cycloalkyl such as N:N1-dioctyl - (2) - p1 - phenylene - diamine, N:N1-di - sec. - butyl - p - phenylene diamine, N:N1-di - cyclohexyl - p - phenylene diamine, or N - sec. - butyl:N1 - cyclohexyl - p - phenylene - diamine. The compound, in liquid form or as a solution or aqueous dispersion may be applied by brushing, spraying, or dipping. Wax, preferably of the microcrystalline type, may be incorporated.
