Abstract

814,471. Vehicle bumpers. SCHARF, A. May 9, 1956 [May 14, 1955], No. 14384/56. Class 103(2) Paddings for guards 2 of vehicle bumpers 5 each comprise a body 7 of rubber or like material having resilient means integral therewith which is capable of enveloping at least a portion of a bumper guard for detachably securing it in position. Fig. 3 shows a padding comprising a central body portion between an upper cup-shaped portion 1, adapted to be slipped over the upper portion of the guard, and a lower portion 3 provided with an inwardly-flanged edge 4 to form a bead-shaped clincher element which engages the lower portion of the guard. In modifications, both portions 1, 3 are formed cup-shaped or with bead-shaped clincher elements. Fig. 5 shows an alternative construction for a guard comprising an upper portion and a bulging lower portion, the bulging portion of the padding defining a recess 6 which bears against the front of the U-shaped bumper, when the padding is mounted, and the bead-shaped clincher element 4 abutting against the inner face of the lower shank thereof. Resilient padding means such as springs are preferably embedded in the body 7, and reflecting elements may be mounted thereon.
