A vehicle has cushions i. l inflated from containers j, which normally house the cushions, or from an inflated cushion c forming the front of the vehicle when the vehicle is in a collision; feelers carried by the front or rear cushions c, p or on the side of the vehicle cause the interior cushions, which are of a transparent plastics material, to be inflated. Some cushions may be manually inflated. The front and rear ends of a rail vehicle may be formed with cushions through which passes a corridor duct, collision contacts causing internal cushions to be inflated and the brakes to be applied. The internal and external cushions may be divided with chambers of different pressures or connected by valves to dampen rebound.
