Abstract
<PICT:0814415/III/1> Anhydrous sodium sulphate is produced by feeding sodium sulphate in association with water, e.g. crystalline hydrates of sodium sulphate, mixtures of crystals of sodium sulphate and solutions thereof, or aqueous solutions containing sodium sulphate into a bed of anhydrous sodium sulphate maintained in a fluidized state by passing a stream of heated gas therethrough. In operation, sodium sulphate hydrate crystals, e.g. Glauber's salt are heated to above their transition temperature 32.4 DEG C. in tank 1 by steam coil 2 to produce a slurry of crystals which is stirred by 3 and is continuously circulated through a cooler 4 and returned to tank 1 by pump 5. Cooler 4 reduces the temperature of the solution, thereby rendering it less saturated with respect to hydrated sodium sulphate and thus preventing the deposition of anhydrous crystals in the pump 5 and surrounding pipes. Bleed-off pipe 7 delivers the solution continuously to the top of a vertical, cylindrical, mild steel drier 8 in the form of a spray which descends 8 against a stream of hot air or super-heated steam. which enters at 9 passes through a stainless steel distributer plate 10 and exits at 11, to form a fluidized bed of anhydrous sodium sulphate at the bottom of drier 8 which is removed by pipe 12 provided at its lower end with a take-off 13. Unheated air from 14 maintains fluidized conditions in 13. Alternative embodiments of the invention include the continuous addition of sodium sulphate hydrate crystals, e.g. Glauber's salt direct to the drier 8 by means of a hopper arranged above it, or the direct spraying of an aqueous solution of sodium sulphate into the top of the drier without any of the pretreatment described above. Specifications 458,572 and 668,601 are referred to.
