Abstract

1,174,378. Alkali metal aminocarboxylates. W. R. GRACE & CO. 31 July, 1968 [31 Aug., 1967], No. 36590/68. Heading C2C. Ammonia-free alkali metal aminocarboxylates are prepared by reacting an aminonitrile and an alkali metal hydroxide in an aqueous medium at 100-150‹ C. and subjecting the reaction mixture to countercurrent contact with steam. The alkali metal hydroxide used may be NaOH or KOH and preferably the reaction mixture is treated with H 2 O 2 as it is contacted with steam. In the examples tri-sodium nitrilotriacetate is obtained by passing nitrilotriacetonitrile and NaOH via pipes 10 and 9 respectively into the reaction kettle 8 from which the product passes down through loose packing material 2 while steam generated from water in pot 16 rises upwards and the tri-sodium salt is collected in pot 16 and discharged through outlet 18.
