Abstract
<PICT:0742574/III/1> Alumina having a very small percentage of soda is prepared by treating a soda-containing monoclinic alumina of the Gibbsite type, with water or a dilute solution of ammonium sulphate, chloride, &c. at 180-230 DEG C. and at a pressure of at least 15 kg./cm.2, recrystallizing under the same temperature and pressure to the less hydrated rhombohedral form, and washing the product. An apparatus suitable for the process consists of a vessel 1 in which water is boiled under pressure, connected by a steam pipe 8 to a tank 5 containing the alumina, which is extracted by the water condensing on the lower ends of metal rods 3 passing through cover 4. A tube 7 is provided for the return of the condensed water to the boiler.
