Class 20(2) A method of underpinning buildings comprises erecting under the length of a wall an underpinning beam E with portions provided with upwardly tapering openings H through which piles are driven or inserted, and filling the openings with concrete. Piers B, erected under adjoining walls A, A<SP>1</SP> comprise upper and lower plates B<SP>1</SP>, separated by pins B<SP>3</SP> and reinforced by members B<SP>4</SP>. Reinforcing rods E connected by loops F are threaded under the wall, through passages between the pins B<SP>3</SP> to extend into a hole D at a corner of the building. A hollow cone of sheet metal H or a square section wooden mould is placed at the juncture of the rods E which are bent to pass round it (Fig. 2) and a pair of rods J is passed through it. After concrete poured into the shuttering G has set, the rods J are withdrawn by their handles J<SP>1</SP> and an upwardly tapering conical hole is left through which a pile is driven or inserted so that its top lies just beneath the bottom of the hole. Reinforcing rods are then inserted through the channels left by the rods J and concrete filled into the hole. Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) disclose overlapping beams at wall junctions using two or one piles respectively. Fig. 6 (not shown) illustrates a pile driven through the beam at a doorway.
