[Also in Group XXXVI] A vacuum-insulated vessel for storing liquefied gases at sub-atmospheric temperatures and having metal walls is made by first electrolytically polishing at least part of the walls defining the evacuated space, electroplating with gold, silver, rhodium, indium, or copper, and then further electrolytically polishing the plated metal. Typically a low carbon stainless steel containing 18 per cent. chromium and 8 per cent. nickel is electropolished, flash electroplated with nickel, electroplated with cyanide copper, and then electropolished, followed by washing, finally with warm demineralized water. The bright surfaces so produced are disposed as the inner surfaces defining the vacuum chamber.
