Abstract
A catalyst for use in polymerizing olefins (see Group IV (a)) comprises an oxide of a metal of Group VIa with an alkali metal, for example in 0.001 to 10 per cent by weight, deposited thereon from the vapour phase, e.g. sodium deposited on the oxide by heating to about 425 DEG C. at 0.1 mm. pressure of nitrogen and then passing the metal vapour over the oxide. The oxides preferred are partially reduced molybdenum trioxide, and chromium oxides (desirably activated by dry oxygen and/or containing strontium oxide). A catalyst support, such as gamma-alumina, titania, zirconia, silica or silica/alumina, may also be present. In the Provisional Specification tungsten and uranium oxides are also specified. Specifications 748,634 and 790,195 are referred to.ALSO:Olefins, such as ethylene and propylene, are polymerized by contact with a catalyst comprising an oxide of a metal of Group VIa, with an alkali metal, for example in an amount of 0.001 to 10 per cent by weight, deposited thereon from the vapour phase, e.g. sodium deposited on the oxide by heating to about 425 DEG C. at 0.1 mm. pressure of nitrogen and then passing the metal vapour over the oxide. The oxides preferred are partially reduced molybdenum trioxide, and chromium oxides (desirably activated by dry oxygen and/or containing strontium oxide). A catalyst support, such as gamma-alumina, titania, zirconia, silica or silica/alumina, may also be used. Inert solvents, which may be used in the polymerization process, are xylene and petroleum ether. The examples illustrate the continuous addition of ethylene during polymerization and a continuous flow process. The Provisional Specification also refers to the polymerization of alkyl, alkenyl and aryl substituted ethylenes, of higher alkenes, of styrene and of butadiene. The use of tungsten and uranium oxides is also specified. Specifications 748,634 and 790,195 are referred to.
