Abstract
813,621. Tanks. WHESSOE Ltd. Jan. 3, 1956 [Oct. 18, 1954], No. 29973/54. Class 69 (1). A vessel 2 in the form of a vertically disposed cylinder 7 with hemispherical ends (only the lower end 3 being shown in Fig. 1 which is a vertical radial section through the vessel wall at one of the points of support) is supported by a number of columns 1 around its circumference, each column being in rolling engagement with the underside of a bracket 4 secured to the outer wall of the vessel, and with a horizontal foundation at its lower end, so that it may rock in a vertical plane through the axis of the vessel to allow the vessel to expand and contract due to changes in temperature or pressure. The curved rolling surfaces at top and bottom of the column preferably have a radius equal to half the height of the column, and bolts passing through the base plates 8 of the brackets and tops 12 of the columns on the normal lines of contact retain these parts in contact while allowing the necessary play, blocks 15 and 16 on the base plates 8 also aiding in this respect. The columns may be of V, or inverted-V, form, engaging two adjacent brackets 4 and a single position on the foundation, or vice versa.
