Abstract

Uranium alloys, for use as full elements in nuclear reactors, have compositions within the following range in per cent by weight: Th 0.1-5.0; U the remainder. The grain size of the alloys may be reduced by quenching, e.g. in water at 40 DEG C., from a temperature within the beta phase range, e.g. 725 DEG C. This treatment is particularly applicable to alloys the uranium content of which has been produced, at least in part by reduction of the tetrafluoride with magnesium.
