Abstract

813,259. Spring suspensions, adjusting body height. MOULTON DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Sept. 1, 1955 [May 18, 1954, July 21, 1955], Nos. 14557/54 and 21137/55. Classes 108(2). and 108(3) Relates to a vehicle suspension having provision for interaction between front and rear wheel suspensions including a single conduit means hydraulically interconnecting the front and rear wheel suspensions at each side of the vehicle in such manner that deflection of the front suspension when traversing a surface inequality effect a corresponding alteration of the rear suspension on the same side and vice versa so as to maintain the attitude of the vehicle substantially constant in the pitch mode thereby reducing pitching. According to the invention, the single conduit means includes a rubber hydraulic accumulator between the front and rear suspensions having an elastic wall in which increase in hydraulic pressure resulting from deflection of the front and or rear wheel suspension produces resilient deformation of the elastic wall, thereby providing springing in bounce and or roll. The term "bounce" refers to vehicle springing movements of the vehicle when it is on an even keel. In the arrangement according to Fig. 1 in which front and rear road wheels are carried by links 4 and 7 respectively pivoted to the vehicle frame 1, each link is sprung by a resilient hollow sphere 11 or 21 of rubber and containing a hydraulic medium 14. The front and rear spheres are interconnected by a metallic pipe line 24 which also communicates with a pump 26 and reservoir 27 and with a rubber hydraulic accumulator 30. The accumulator comprises a chamber 40 formed between two frusto-conical rings 41 and 42 in which are disposed metal ferrules 45 and 46 and rubber rings 43 and 44 bonded to the rings 41 and 42 and to the ferrules 45 and 46 respectively. A valve 28 controls the connection of line 24 to the pump 26 or to the accumulator 30. In another arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown) the accumulator is constituted by resilient piping interconnecting the spheres 11 and 21 and replacing the pipe line 24 of Fig. 1. The resilient piping is in two sections connected together by a metal junction pipe carrying the valve 28. In the arrangement according to Fig. 3 in which resilient pipe sections 54 and 55 are also used, the spheres 11 and 21 are replaced by rubber springs 61 and 62 each of which is combined with a telescopic hydraulic damper 60. Each spring comprises rubber elements 65 and 66 bonded to ferrules 64 and 67 and to a sleeve 68 to define a chamber for the hydraulic medium. The cylinder of the damper, which is welded to the ferrule 64, communicates with the spring chamber, a piston rod 70 of the damper being attached to the ferrule 67. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) the damper fluid is isolated by seals from that of the spring chambers. Specification 763,432 is referred to.
