Abstract

634,115. Vehicle spring-suspensions. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and SEDDON, R. M. March 20, 1947, No. 7645. [Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii)] A vehicle suspension comprises a cylinder fitted with two opposed pistons operable by the vertical movement of a wheel to move toward or away from one another, simultaneously, fluid within the cylinder being in communication with a resilient device including a plunger operable by fluid-pressure to place resilient material under load. Each wheel-carrying arm 9 is mounted on two short spindles 8 which have opposite-handed, multi-start screw-threads 20, 21 engaging similar threads on the inside of pistons 2. These latter can slide in a housing 1, but are restrained from rotation relative thereto by pins 19 which engage in slots 7 in the piston walls. Vertical movement of the arm 9 causes the pistons to approach or recede from one another, causing fluid flow between the cylinder through a pipe 5 to one of the cylinders 17, Fig. 2, of a resilient device. The latter comprises a casing 10 containing, at each end, a stack of resilient discs 11, each stack being adapted to be compressed between an end cap of the cylinder and the head 12 of a plunger 13 which slides in one of the cylinders 17 in a central block 14. Each resilient disc 11 is dished, having on one side a depression and on the other a boss so as to fit into adjacent discs. The head 12 has a raised boss and the cylinder end a depression to engage the inner and outermost discs of each stack. A resilient ring 16 is placed between the underside of each head 12 and the central block 14 to resist rebound shocks. When a pair of opposite wheels are to be operatively associated with one another, their pipes 5 are connected to the cylinders 17 of the device shown in Fig. 3, which comprises a casing 10 having at each end a block 14 in the central bore 17 of which slides a plunger 13. A stack of inter-engaging resilient discs 11 is placed between the faces of the opposed heads 12 of the plungers 13. At the centre of the stack, the bosses of two discs abut, forming an annular space in which may be placed a supporting ring, as described in Specification 634,111. Resilient rings 16 are provided to absorb rebound shocks. A damping device 18 allows free flow into the cylinders 17 but restricts flow therefrom. The pressure of fluid in the suspension system, and hence the riding height of the vehicle, may be varied by a pump which communicates with the cylinder 1 through a pipe 6.
