Abstract

Graphite in an oxidizing atmosphere at high temperature, e.g as the core of an oxidising-gas-cooled nuclear reactor, is protected by providing on it an adherent continuous coating of a refractory cement incorporating powdered graphite and a binder. The binder may be based on a water-soluble aluminium phosphate e.g. acid aluminium ortho-phosphate and at least one of the inorganic compounds:-kaolin, alumina, silica, bismuth oxide, red lead, zirconium oxide and magnesium oxide may be incorporated.
