Pulp mill effluent is burnt in a chamber previously heated to a temperature sufficient to evaporate the liquid content by passing air through the solid residues whilst the chamber is still hot enough to support combustion. An incinerating plant comprises three cylindrical, refractorylined steel chambers 1, 2, 3, each filled with chequered brickwork and having valved-controlled effluent, air and oil fuel inlets 4, 6, 8, and valve-controlled steam and waste gas flue outlets 12, 10. Steam is led to an accumulator 13, from whence, after cleaning, it is used for power, whilst the waste gases pass to a chimney 11. In operation, air and oil are passed via pumps 9, 7 into the chamber 1 to heat the brickwork, the steam and flue outlets being closed and open respectively. The air, oil and flue valves are then closed, the steam outlet is opened and effluent is forced by a pump 5 on to the brickwork, the resulting steam passing to the accumulator. The chamber 2 is now heated by oil firing and the effluent inlet and steam outlet of the chamber 1 are closed whilst the air inlet and flue outlet are opened, so that air may be passed through the hot chamber to effect combustion of the solid residues. During this process effluent is fed into and evaporated in the chamber 2 prior to its combustion phase which is simultaneous with the next evaporation phase in the chamber 1. This operational cycle is repeated until one chamber requires cleaning when the third one, 3, is brought into use. Depending upon its combustible content, the effluent may be either diluted with water or mixed with added solid carbonaceous matter.
