Abstract

812,348. Microphones. MURKHAM, L. W. Aug. 22, 1955 [June 3, 1954], No. 16439/54. Class 40 (4). In a moving coil transducer the air gap is connected to atmosphere on the side remote from the diaphragm through an acoustic path which is restricted to eliminate the effect on the diaphragm of resonance in the path. A substantially annular path between the centre pole 10 of a microphone, Fig. 1, and an internally ribbed non-magnetic sleeve 16 connects the gap to atmosphere through an annular path 16a and holes 11a. The diaphragm 14 is clamped between spacing washers 18, 19, by a clamping piece 17 and a block 20 the contours of which correspond with that of the diaphragm by a part 28 of the casing. Vents 22 connect the diaphragm to atmosphere. The instrument employs a permanent magnet 12 and the interengaging shoulders on parts 13, 16 and 17 serve to locate the polepiece 13 and centre the diaphragm. A boring in the central pole 10 communicates through a narrow bore 10a with the dished portion of the diaphragm to modify the damping characteristic. Openings in casing 23 are covered with protective gauzes 23a and 24-26.
