Abstract
231,420. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Kellogg, E. W.). March 27, 1924, [Convention date]. Magnetic instruments; diaphragms; loudspeakers.-A diaphragm adapted to vibrate as a whole is suspended so that its natural frequency is below the lowest important voice frequency. The first overtone is preferably above the voice range. In a moving coil instrument, the diaphragm is either in the form of two intersecting conical surfaces, Fig. 3, or parabolic, Fig. 4. The coil 2 is secured to a ring 6 which in Fig. 3 is secured to the diaphragm at the intersection of the two surfaces. The diaphragm is mounted by being secured to a rubber ring 8, Fig. 3, or by four threads 16, Fig. 4, adjustable in tension by means of screws 17. The air space behind the diaphragm is reduced by a plate 10 attached to the outer pole-piece 4 to raise its resonance above the voice frequencies, and vents 11 are formed in the plate 10 in order to reduce the sharpness of resonance. The air between the coil an'd the inner pole is vented by holes 9 in the ring 6. The air spaces may be damped with sound absorbing material. The form shown in Fig. 3 is used with a baffle-board 12, as described in Specification 231,421, but may be used with a horn. The form shown in Fig. 4 is used with a horn 14 with which a passage 13 down the inner pole-piece communicates. A cap 19 of non-magnetic material is secured to the inner pole-piece to reduce the air cavity at the entrance to the horn and a similar device may be used with the form shown in Fig. 3. The magnet used in either form may be a permanent one or mav be magnetized by a coil 5. If rectified alternating-current be supplied to the coil 5, the end 20 constitutes a shortcircuited turn of low-resistance by making it of copper. This may constitute the spool head, as shown, or may be spaced from it. and serves to steady the pulsating current. The spool head furthest from the air gap is either of iron or of non-conducting material. Specifications 227,162 and 229,759 are referred to.
