811,799. Automatic speed control systems. GRESHAM & CRAVEN Ltd., MARSH, G. C., and HUNTER, I. P. July 10, 1957 [July 11, 1956], No. 21440/56. Class 38 (4). The speed of a braking compressor or exhauster 20, Fig. 1, driven by the main diesel engine 24 of a locomotive is maintained constant by a steplessly variable speed-changing gearbox 21, which is controlled by an electrical servomotor 23 responsive to a speed-sensitive device 26 and arrangements are provided whereby the gear-box is returned to its lowest ratio on shut down. Relays which control the servomotor and are housed in a unit 29 may be switched by change-over switch 27 to maintain the compressor or exhauster at one of two predetermined speeds. The driven shaft 1, Fig. 2, which causes permanent magnets 4 to rotate within soft iron laminations 5, generates eddy currents in an aluminium cup 6 to rotate a shaft 8 carrying relay operating contacts 9 to a position indicative of the speed of shaft 1 determined by a counter torque spiral spring 7. Increase and decrease speed relays are connected to insulated contact segments in the housing, separate pairs of segments being provided for the alternative speeds. The gear-box is returned to its lowest ratio on shut down by the action of spring 7.
