Class 35 A motor for a sewing machine &c. has a rotor 20 free to rotate on the shaft 14 and adapted to be coupled thereto by a clutch 29, 30. The shaft 14 is carried by two bearings 15, 16 and the rotor and clutch are located between these two bearings so as to provide a compact construction The rotor is caried by a sleeve 21 supported by journal bearings 22, 23 on the shaft 14. Endwise movement of the rotor 20 is prevented by collars 24, 25 secured to the shaft 14. When the clutch plate 30 is fully disengaged from the other clutch member 29, it comes into contact with a brake sleeve 42 which is carried by an adjustable mounting consisting of a screwed member 43 extending through the housing part 12.
