Abstract

719,698. Speed indicators. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. May 2, 1952 [May 4, 1951], No. 10498/51. Class 106 (3). [Also in Group XXXVIII] Apparatus for detecting the slip of a belt or rope relative to an associated driving or driven rotating member with which it runs in contact comprises, in combination, a tachometer generator arranged in driven relationship with the totaling member, a tachometer generator frictionally driven from the belt or rope, and comparison means responsive to the resultant of the outputs of the two tachometer generators. Friction discs 12, 13, Fig. 1, driven respectively from a belt driving drum 14 and from the belt 15 are mounted on the shafts of direct current tachometer generators 10, 11 the outputs of which are applied as shown in Fig. 2 to a tapped resistor 18 The circuit includes contacts 20a of a relay 20, a starting switch 22 and the operating coil 23 of a motor contactor. The tappmg point is selected in accordance with the desired percentage slip which is to be detected. The rectifier 19 allows current to flow through the relay 20 when the voltage of the tachometer generator 11 falls below the voltage tapped off the resistor 18. On operation of the relay 20 the motor contactor is tripped to stop the belt. A voltmeter calibrated in terms of slip may be connected in circuit with the tachometer generators so as to be responsive to the difference in the output voltages. A differential relay may be used to control the main motor contactor.
